Things to be fixed in Somerville - December 2025

There has been lots happening in Somerville since we last sent out our list of "Things to be fixed in Somerville" back in May 2025.

It was great to see the tree planting that occurred in September along Frankston-Flinders Road and Jones Road. The original "seed" for this came from the Somerville Township Structure Plan (A19) way back in June 2019. People often deride these type of Council plans as a waste of money, but if you participate in them, the Council does eventually do something. Thank you to Cr Kate Roper for reading the Plan and following it through to fruition. Special mention to local Alden Collins who has advocated for tree planting in Somerville and identified places where trees may be planted.

Another battle has been the state of the South Western carpark. This was highlighted by one of our members asking Somerville people to do better and stop dumping rubbish around the Charity CLOTHING bins located in the car park.

Ongoing we have been back and forth with Lukas Hogenbirk from Paul Mercurio's office, Vic Track (landowner) and Metro Trains (responsible entity) to clean up the general area around Somerville station. In the last month the dumped TV's and general waste seem to have been removed, but there is still a pile of builder's waste from the Covid days sitting near Frankston-Flinders Road.

One local resident reported four couches that are littered along the railway line between Park Lane and the Railway Station. They reported that they got the same run around, MTM say ring Vic Track or the Council. It is all very frustrating, maybe there needs to be a State Government concierge to sort this crap out.

It is great to see the Baxter to Somerville trail coming to fruition and some 20 years in the planning. With the tunnelling that will occur at the Sailor's Bend area delaying the project, it is expected the project will be complete in March 2026. Watch for road closures around the site. Hopefully all levels of politics will open the completion of the project on the same day at the same time!!

We have received a grant from MPSC to refurbish the toilets near the Railway Station. The builder has been appointed and works will start soon on restoring the building. We will be looking for donations of materials especially timber, wall tiles and clear poly carbonate roofing. Given this is a council project all tradesmen require the appropriate checks and the materials used need to be up to council commercial standards.

Importantly the Somerville Recreation Reserve Draft Masterplan is also up for comment (closing on Wednesday 3/12), please make sure you make some comments on the MPSC site for this very worthwhile project.

It is great to see things happening in Somerville, there is still a lot of "Things to be fixed in Somerville" but we all need to make Somerville a great place to Shop, Work, Invest and Play for all relevant stakeholders.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
