Student Work Experience for local Secondary Colleges - please help.

SOMERVILLE SECONDARY COLLEGE

The Year 10 WEX program is for a week, May 15 to May 19.

Work experience is the short-term placement of secondary school students, generally from Year 10, with employers

to provide insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located. It provides students with the

valuable opportunity to:

1. develop employability skills

2. explore possible career options

3. understand employer expectations

4. increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence.

Students are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require

extensive training or expertise. Student should be given jobs that are safe and are age and experience appropriate.

This enables them to have a real world experience relating to their chosen industry.

Examples of the paperwork the students will bring with them to a meeting are attached.

The employer can expect an enthusiastic young person who wants to work and learn more about their industry.

Students should be willing to work according to directions and instructions in a safe environment. They should be

willing to learn and to follow instructions in the same way an employee would. The employer gets to trial a student

and build a relationship that could lead to a future opportunity.

Places students are seeking include;

1. Real Estate

2. Financial Services (broad and could be anything)

3. Landscaping / pool / maintenance or similar

4. Construction industry (Students will have a white card)

5. Animal care – Veterinary or even pet barn etc

6. Health care (Not Aged care but students with a Nursing pathway)

Thank you so much for your support and for the support of the Business group.
