With the recent post on Monday night (22nd September, 2025) relating to the Somerville Roundabout, Facebook tells us that this post reached over 20 000 views, with plenty of constructive comments and some not so constructive comments.

People questioned the cost to construct a solution to our outdated Somerville Roundabout which goes through the middle of town. The State Government estimate given to us by Paul Mercurio at our meeting on Monday 15th September, 2025 was $30 to 35 million.
So where does this money come from?
How do our governments fund the Baxter to Somerville Bike Path ($7 million), Roundabout ($30 million), works around Somerville Railway Station ($2 million) and Somerville Recreation Reserve ($15 million)?
We must remember that our taxes and duties are used to provide the following services-:
Post, Telephone and Internet
Immigration
Defence
Schools
Universities and Training Education
Hospitals and Healthcare
Policing
Roads
Public Transport
Social Services
NDIS
Rubbish collecting and recycling
Parks, sports and swimming pools
Parking
Are you aware that Somerville residents pay a combined $ 132 million (conservatively) in Federal, State and Local Government taxes and duties EACH year? Over a ten year period (5 years forward and five years back) this equates to $1.3 billion.
Please refer to the attached file to see how using the Census figures and conservative estimates we have calculated these figures. This has been put together by one of our members. This is how governments at all levels pay and provide for these services.
This is why SBG engage with our elected Government representatives, to hold them accountable for the taxes and duties that our residents and businesses pay each year and then make Somerville a better place to live, work, invest and play.
To those that think we are a "little made up "committee"", our meetings are open to the public. We have a loyal bunch of business owners who take time out from their own businesses to create strategies that will drive economic benefits to the business owners in Somerville. Members employ up to 500 staff, many of whom live in Somerville.
Some members volunteer their time writing articles, posting on social media, getting local issues fixed and updated, attending meetings, and at Christmas time we run Santa comes to Somerville.
One thing we hate to see is "monies always go to the other side of the peninsula", well Somerville Business Group are stepping up to the plate, and getting the job done working with all levels of government.
If something needs to be done , let us know!!!
